چکیده

This report presents a formal framework to investigate the relationship between OSI protocol speci cations, conformance, and interoperability. We discuss the extent to which conformance is a su cient condition for interoperability, i.e. validating the conformance of a protocol implementation with respect to its specication su ces to determine whether the implementation is able to interoperate with other implementations providing services. We show that a single notation can be employed for the characterisation of speci cations, conformance, and interoperability. A speci cation is a set of traces of actions. Similarly, a single execution of a protocol implementation can be viewed as a trace of actions. We say that a protocol implementation conforms to its speci cation if the set of traces of the implementation is contained in the speci cation (safety property). By de ning additional constraints, known as liveness properties, we obtain a de nition of conformance that is a su cient condition for interoperability. However, an implementation does not have to support every speci ed service. We introduce the notion protocol speci cation space (an ordered set of specications) to de ne the dependencies between speci cations of combinations of services. In order to derive a protocol speci cation space from a single protocol speci cation (the one standardised), we de ne a reduction operator. We prove that this operator preserves the dependencies between speci cations.

Conformance Testing and Interoperability: A Case Study in Healthcare Data Exchange

Correct data exchange is critical for ensuring reliable healthcare systems. Standards based systems are the foundation for achieving this goal. However, standards alone are not enough to ensure this promise; conformance and interoperability testing are essential. We present and compare conformance testing strategies for a widely used healthcare clinical data exchange messaging standard. We disc...

Relating Interoperability Testing with Conformance Testing

Conventionally the term conformance testing has been used to indiscriminately denote different types of conformance testing in a broad sense and the term interoperability testing has been used without regard to possibly different interoperability test architectures. This study classifies conformance testing into interface conformance testing and entity conformance testing and investigates how t...

Establishment of the Product Level Conformity Assessment Case: Japan Automotive Software Platform and Architecture

As the variety of interoperability test has been excused in the platform of “smart community”, SDOs (standards developing organizations) have recently emphasized the importance of the system level conformity assessment (SLCA) which is free from the interoperability problems of complex product system. In the real industrial world, however, even the PLCA (Product Level Conformity Assessment) have...

A quality score honoring approach to semantic conformance assessment of minutiae-based feature extractors

The use of biometric systems is steadily increasing, which leads to heterogeneity and, thus, possibly interoperability issues. In order to address such issues, standards are developed by ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1. In the case of minutiae-based fingerprint recognition, for instance, ISO/IEC 19794-2 defines biometric data interchange records that vendors should adhere to. To validate ad...
